The area that is now known as Evesham Township was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. They lived in the region for thousands of years before the European settlers arrived. In 1672, William and Elizabeth Haines and a group of English Quakers purchased a section of land from the Lenape, and they established a settlement in the area.
They named the settlement Marlton, derived from Marlborough, England. Similarly, they named the surrounding region Evesham, which was the name of a town in Worcestershire, England. In the Revolutionary War, Evesham became a strategic location…it being close to the Delaware River, Evesham became a site for several major battles.
The Evesham area continued to grow, as farming and milling in the area became the primary industries. As the Industrial Revolution happened, the economy of the region shifted from agriculture to industry, as factories and mills began to be built in the area. The growth of railroads caused the Evesham region to grow as well, and the area continued to prosper.
In the 20th century, as highways and residential neighborhoods began to develop across the country, the Evesham area continued to grow and develop, and today it is a thriving community of over 45,000 residents.
The history of Evesham Township is a small cross section of the history of the United States and its growth. Today it’s a great place to live and raise a family, with highly rated schools, beautiful parks, and a terrific community spirit.
